What is the Crude Chronicles all about and how can it help YOU?

I bring a differentiated historical perspective to the world of oil & gas!

The Crude Chronicles is known for the historical perspective that I provide on the oil & gas industry.

I achieve this by locating and gathering old annual reports, manually inputting the data into my Excel files. This enables me to furnish you with the financial histories of various oil & gas companies, dating back to the days of Standard Oil.

I help YOU understand “where we are in the cycle.”

“History doesn’t repeat but it sure does rhyme.” I attempt to narrate the rhythms of the oil & gas industry through charts, such as this capital spending chart dating back to 1891.

I try to help YOU understand what we can learn from the cycles.

History never repeats itself in the exact same manner, but there are various lessons we can learn from prior cycles. For example, did you know that in 2020 when I began what would eventually become the Crude Chronicles, the oil & gas sector plummeted to a level not witnessed since before the outbreak of World War I and the dawn of the automobile age?

What’s the Price of the Crude Chronicles and What Do I Get for It?

Crude Chronicle subscribers get 2 articles per week (Tuesday & Friday). Article include a chart packed post and recently I have started to add video content. My goal is that the arrival of each one sparks an “Ooh, I get to read that!” response.

Is the Crude Chronicles for you.

Many of my subscribers hail from:

  • Small & large buyside organizations (long-only, hedge fund community, private equity, family offices, etc)

  • Sell-side/investment banking organizations.

  • C-suites of very large oil & gas companies from around the world.

  • Owners of medium and private oil & gas companies.

  • Individuals within the upstream, oilfield service, drilling, downstream refining and midstream space

  • Members of the media.

  • Members of the consulting industry.

  • Individuals with a vested interest in the oil & gas space.

The Crude Chronicles is written for those who have a more "institutional" background, incorporating financial industry jargon. However, I strive to avoid the dry and tedious style often associated with institutional research, which I endured for 15 years. For example, I will never bombard your inbox with boring earnings recap notes.

Who am I.

My name is Robert (Rob) Connors and I spent +15 years as a sell side research analyst covering various companies in the oil & gas, industrials, transportation and aerospace & defense sector.

I majored in Finance and after college obtained the CFA and CPA designations.

I was fortunate enough to have a great mentor on the sell side who taught me the value of understanding and studying my history. In 2011 I earned the Institutional Investor’s Rising Stars award.

I have 2 kids (Will & Reese) and an amazing and supportive wife (Emily).

I started what eventually would become the Crude Chronicles in late 2020 as energy was going through yet another secular bust.

I love writing about the history of this industry and for the first time in years feel as if I am truly doing what I was meant to do with my career.
